In Conversation With Milly Kenny-Ryder

When I think of Milly, I think of stylish eateries, delicious food, artful interior scenes and her famous table-top photography. As one of the original bloggers, Milly has been writing about food, fashion and travel since 2010 on the digital pages of Thoroughly Modern Milly

Taking her passion for travel and eye for delicacy, Milly launched Weekend Journals, a series of guidebooks to London, Cornwall and Provence. We naturally stock these travel books instore at Caro and highly recommend taking a look thought, at the special places they have discovered to visit.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day is different but always begins with coffee, either in bed from my beloved Sage coffee machine, or out and about with a breakfast meeting. Usually I’ve got a lunch booking, either reviewing a new restaurant, photographing a menu for a client or meeting a contact to discuss a new project. I used to trek around town all day sometimes trying 3 or 4 restaurants a day, but as my baby Wilf comes with me to everything now I’m wary that I can’t do as much, so usually we’ll head home in the afternoon. Other days I’m at home styling shoots for Instagram brand collaborations, working on my Weekend Journals guidebooks or collaborating with chefs on a cookbook or at home delivery service.

Where’s your dream escape destination?

A destination with great food that isn’t already all over Instagram. I love discovering less obvious places, particularly cities. Before Corona happened I had trips planned to New Orleans and Romania, specifically a Transylvania road trip… I’d love to get them reorganised.

What’s your vice?

A really good takeaway coffee from a speciality coffee shop and a super buttery pain au chocolat. During lock down I became addicted to my local brunch spot, Juliet’s, dark chocolate, marshmallow & sea salt cookies. It was the reward at the end of a long walk.

What are you listening to at the moment? (Music, podcast, audio book?)

I dip in and out of podcasts - recently I’ve enjoyed The Adam Buxton Podcast and Grounded by Louis Theroux. With a 9 month old baby sadly reading a book has taken a back seat but I’m hoping to get stuck into a few good books this summer while on holiday in France.

Whats your favourite thing to eat?

An impossible question. Homemade ravioli with simple tomato sauce (and lots of parmesan), or really good Roast Chicken at home with my whole family. Or a soufflé for dessert at a michelin star restaurant.

What are you most curious about?

The stories behind fine dining restaurant experiences, what motivates the chef and inspires the dishes. I’m also addicted to finding out the best places to go and eat, drink and shop in a new destination and I can’t wait to travel and explore again. My guidebooks are a physical manifestation of this I guess!

What’s the most memorable piece of advice you’ve received?

Lots of things come to mind, but probably the main piece of advice that drives me forward in my work is my dad assuring me I don’t have to have one career I do every day. If you can have a pick’n’mix assortment of jobs it’s likely to inspire me more day to day and keep each job exciting. My parents are both artists and seeing them love their work has definitely always encouraged my siblings and I to do hobbies we love and turn them into work.

What are your top 3 items at Caro?

Last time I visited I invested in a Sideline red dress, it’s a lovely boutique brand I hadn’t discovered before and the dress has been perfect this summer.

As a food stylist / photographer I’m always on the look out for beautiful and unique ceramics - I’ve currently got my eye on the Kana collection at Caro.

I’m an addict of Caro’s Earl Grey and Biscuit Blonde chocolate, a collaboration with the brilliant The Chocolate Society.
